Life in a 55+ or HOA community is supposed to be easier, and your front door should be part of that. Maybe the entry feels dark, or the glass you have shows the whole living room to anyone rolling by in a golf cart. A new front door glass insert is a simple fix, and you keep the door you have.
Glass door inserts for 55+ and HOA communities give you more daylight and the right amount of privacy, and they ask almost nothing of you once they’re in. We install these custom glass door inserts in the doors you already have. That includes front entries, garage doors, side doors and the cabana or pool-bath door off the lanai.
Brighter rooms that still feel private
Many homes in planned communities have an entry door that opens right into the main living space. A solid door leaves that area dim, while a big clear window can feel like you’re on display. Privacy glass splits the difference, bringing in soft natural light while blurring the view from the walk.
Our privacy and textured glass is rated Low, Medium, High and Max. Here’s how homeowners in close-knit neighborhoods often think it through:
| What matters most to you | Glass worth asking about |
|---|---|
| Knowing someone’s at the door before you open it | Low privacy, or clear glass with enclosed blinds |
| A bright foyer with no view into the living room | High privacy textured glass |
| A bathroom or bedroom door near the lanai | Max privacy glass |
| Light by day, full privacy at night | Enclosed blinds sealed between the panes |
| A front door that takes hard afternoon sun | Low-E glass or gray tinted “turtle glass” |
A chart only gets you so far, and most people already lean toward one row of it. At your free estimate we stand at your door with you, talk through the light it gets and help you settle on a privacy level.
Knowing when someone’s on the step
Knowing what’s happening at the door matters, especially if you live alone or travel often. A door with no glass leaves you guessing about who’s knocking, and squinting through a peephole gets old fast. With Low privacy glass you may make out a shape on the step from the hallway. Higher levels show light and movement, and the details of your home stay private. Pair it with a good porch light and the entry feels a lot more welcoming after dark, too.
Easy-care options that suit a lock-and-leave lifestyle
Once you’re done with home projects that eat up whole weekends, the last thing you want is a door that needs fussing. Enclosed blinds sit sealed between two panes of glass, so there are no cords to tangle and nothing to dust. You tilt them open or closed with a small slider, which is easy on the hands, and they’re a nice choice if grandkids or pets visit.
Grilles between the glass work the same way. You get the classic look of divided panes, but the grilles live inside the glass, so washing the window is just one flat surface. Decorative glass inserts, with bevels and textures in metal caming, usually need no more care than a regular window.
A short visit, then back to your day
The installation is one visit, usually about one to two hours. There’s no trim removal and no repainting, and in most cases the door stays on its hinges. We protect and clean the area we work in, so you’re not left with a mess to deal with. If you or a family member would like to read it through first, how our process works covers each stage.
Thinking ahead if you’re here part of the year
Plenty of Florida retirees split the year between here and somewhere cooler. If your house sits empty for a few months, a clear glass front door shows that nobody’s home. High or Max privacy glass, or enclosed blinds you close before you leave, keeps the inside mostly out of view while you’re gone.
If you’re only here part of the year, tell us your dates when you call. We’ll do our best to fit the estimate and the install visit into the stretch you’re in town. If you’re coming down soon, you’re welcome to call ahead and start the conversation by phone at (866) 326-9947.
Gray tinted “turtle glass” is worth a look for anyone whose front door faces strong sun or open water. Its gray tint helps soften the glare on a door that catches a lot of light. Separately, many of our designs come in impact-rated versions. An impact rating applies to the whole tested assembly of glass, frame and door, so new glass alone doesn’t make your existing door hurricane-rated. Still, we’ll gladly help you choose an impact-rated design if you’d like one.
How architectural review fits into the plan
In most age-restricted and HOA neighborhoods, changes to the outside of a home follow written guidelines, and an architectural review committee often weighs in on doors, glass and finishes. Some of these hand out a list of approved styles, while others decide case by case.
In most communities, the homeowner submits the request. We’re glad to give you the design name, the caming finish and a photo of the design to go with it. Caming finishes include patina, satin and platinum nickel, black chrome, oil-rubbed bronze, wrought-iron looks, black or silver aluminum, and brass on some designs. That gives you room to find something that fits your community’s look. With your committee’s guidelines in hand, you can look through our catalog of glass designs and shortlist a few favorites.
We’re an independent company, and we aren’t affiliated with or endorsed by any community or HOA. Ask your committee what it needs from you, and we’ll help you choose the design, privacy level and finish you’d like.
Communities where we work with homeowners
We work with homeowners in and around many of Florida’s well-known active-adult communities. That includes The Villages, which spreads across Sumter, Marion and Lake counties, and On Top of the World in Ocala. Over on the Gulf side, we visit homes in Timber Pines in Spring Hill, Heritage Pines in Hudson and Sun City Center in southern Hillsborough County.
You’ll also find us in Solivita near Kissimmee and in the master-planned community of Citrus Hills in Citrus County. We visit the gated Spruce Creek communities in Summerfield, near Ocala, too. The rest of the places we go are on our areas served list.
Whether you’re in a golf community with a full calendar of clubs or a quiet HOA street with a handful of neighbors, the same idea applies. A well-chosen insert adds curb appeal that looks right on your house and right for the neighborhood.
Questions about glass inserts in 55+ and HOA neighborhoods
Can you add glass to the door I have, or do I need a new one?
In most cases you can keep your door. We can add glass to a solid door, or replace the old glass in your front door with something more private. Most exterior doors can take an insert, and we’ll confirm yours at the free estimate. It’s a much smaller project than replacing the whole door and frame.
Can you help with my HOA application?
In a limited way. You’ll submit it yourself, and we can give you the design name, the finish and a photo of the design. Your committee can tell you what else it wants to see, and the decision is always theirs.
Are enclosed blinds easy to use if I have arthritis in my hands?
They’re about as easy as it gets. There are no cords to pull and no slats to dust, and you adjust them with a small slider built into the frame. At the estimate we’ll look at that door with you and help you decide whether blinds make sense there.
Can I update the garage and the pool-bath door too?
Yes. Many homeowners like to match the front door with their garage windows or put privacy glass in the cabana door by the pool. Our pages on garage door glass inserts and cabana and pool-bath door glass cover those in more detail.
I just bought a newer home in a 55+ community. Is the builder door worth upgrading?
Often it is, since many newer homes come with a fairly plain entry. Our page on glass door inserts for new construction homes talks about builder doors and how to add glass after closing.
